The latest Buy-to-Let index from our parent company LSL Property Services has shown that average rents across England and Wales have increased by over half a per cent during May when compared to the month before.

Annual price rises are still marginally higher year on year – 1.1% more than May 2013.  The consumer prices index (CPI) shows that inflation was 1.5% during the same time.

Average rents nationwide are still up year on year with the average monthly rent in May being £745 compared to £737 in May 2013. “Private renting is becoming cheaper in real terms,” says David Brown, Managing Director of LSLi Property Services.

“May’s latest sub-inflation rent rises will help over nine million tenants. To put that in context, this is more than a hundred times as many households as have benefitted from Help to Buy in its initial stages so far.”
