Code of Conduct for letting agents

Goodfellows know that an unwritten code of conduct underpins good practice in the letting industry. It is reassuring to see one of our trade bodies, The Association of Residential Letting Agents ARLA, describe the introduction of a code of conduct and official register for letting agents north of the border as “a watershed moment for the industry.”

The new code of conduct for letting agents has now come into force and has to be met by anyone engaged in lettings in Scotland. It is particularly useful when it comes to how clients’ money should be handled. The code makes it compulsory for businesses to have Client Money Protection and professional indemnity insurance.

Goodfellows have long prided themselves as operating with a certain level of professionalism around lettings. This is now being thoroughly endorsed by ARLAs chief executive, David Cox, he says this more formalised professionalism marks a new era in the letting industry. “This is a watershed moment for the industry. We have long campaigned for the regulation of letting agents both north and south of the border and are pleased the Scottish Government has picked up the mantle and introduced minimum standards”.

He adds “Agents now have eight months to familiarise themselves with the code, and complete any training that needs to be done to fulfil the criteria. Once the deadline for applications has passed on September 30, it will be a criminal offence to carry out letting agency work in Scotland if you’re not on the register”.

As long standing members or ARLA Goodfellows are sure that the requirements, mirroring ARLA Propertymark’s membership criteria, will drive up standards in the industry. We all want to improve the quality of property management for tenants and landlord alike, and eliminate any rogue agents who bring the industry into disrepute.

If you are a landlord looking for lettings advice or wish to become a landlord and are looking for an estate agent in Surrey and South West London who are always one step ahead of the market then why not pop into your local branch of Goodfellows for a chat and a coffee or call our team on 020 8687 8345.
