Wimbledon is well under way this year running from the 25th June to the 15th July 2017. It’s a time when Wimbledon Village comes alive with sports men and women, tennis fans, teams and coaches.
Wimbledon is most associated with Pimms and Strawberries and of course all-lawn tennis courts. Starting off as private courts back in 1868 the first Wimbledon Championship started in July 1877.
The players with the most amount of wins include Roger Federer, Pete Sampres and William Renshaw are tied with 7 Wimbledon titles. Martina Navratilova has won 9 Wimbledon titles.
Last year Andy Murray won his third major and second Wimbledon title defeating Milos Raonic in a close drawn and nail-biting battle 6-4. 7-6, 7-6. Serana Williams defended her title by defeating Angelique Kerber in the final 7-5, 6-3, winning her seventh Wimbledon title.
A staggering 54, 250 balls were used in the Championship period last year. They are stored at 20c with new balls rolled our after seven games, allowing them to warm up. If you want to take a slice of Wimbledon home with you, you can purchase them for £2.50 per can of three.
Wimbledon is the single largest annual sports event. Each year around 235,00 glasses of Pimm’s, 142,000 portions of Strawberries and 28,000 bottles of champagne is consumed.
Of course Wimbledon is not just about the tennis, for the rest of the year the village offers an endless list of events and entertainment as well as being a great place to live and bring up a family.
