Spring half term in Surrey for most schools is Monday 16th February to Friday 20th. If you’re looking for something to do, why not have a look at some of the events we have found:
Wild Woodland Camp – 18-20 February. “Have a wild time this half term with tracking, wild art, bushcraft and den building – aimed at children from 8-13 years.” 9am – 4pm £35 a day. Advanced booking is required – www.painshill.co.uk or call 01932 868113
Spitfire Kids Trail at Polesden Lacey
From 14 -22 February, 11am – 330pm, normal admission plus £2 per child.
“This February half term Polesden Lacey will pay homage to World War Two with an interactive trail that asks kids to consider what it was like to be an evacuee during the war. Polesden Lacey is well-known for its sumptuous interiors and decadent cream teas, but not many people know that Margaret Greville, who owned the house until her death in 1942, did her bit for the war effort by buying a spitfire for the RAF.
On the Spitfire Kids trail, which runs from Saturday 14th until Sunday 22nd of February, children must uncover a series of time capsules left by evacuees containing objects with special meaning from the war. “One of the time capsules contains silk knickers made from a recycled parachute,” says Milsom, “while another contains a banana because it’s the kind of thing they just couldn’t get during the war. We’re hoping our younger visitors will come away with a better understand of how people lived during the Second World War.”
Finally, this trail isn’t called Spitfire Kids for nothing! After finding all time capsules participants will help to recreate Mrs Greville’s spitfire by using wartime propaganda to cover an 8ft model spitfire shell in papier-mâché.
The Spitfire Kids trail is one of a series of activities marking Polesden’s involvement in the war. During 1915 the house became a convalescent home for soldiers injured in the war and their stories are told in a display entitled Society’s Soldiers, running from February 28th until October 31st.”
