Mitcham is a district of south west London in the London Borough of Merton. Formerly a typical Surrey village there is still evidence of this history mixed in with modern development. Just a short distance to central London Mitcham is served well by trains, bus routes and roads – giving local residents a feeling of ‘living in the country with easy access to the City’.
The history of Mitcham centres on Surrey’s Lavender Trail. The trail runs from Mitcham to Carshalton and during Queen Elizabeth I’s reign became known as a healing area for people suffering from illnesses. Although the lavender fields were swallowed up during the industrial revolution there is still a beautiful trail enjoyed by many today. Mitcham is also home to a large green open space known as Mitcham Common, famous for it’s seven ponds.
Mitcham today is an eclectic mix of age, ethnic groups and religion. The housing available is reflective of the residents with a mix of new apartment buildings, 1930’s and 1950’s family homes right through to grand homes that surround the Common. The community feel of years gone by is still present with sports, social and family groups in abundance. Mitcham Golf Club, Community Sports Club and Athletics Club are just a small number of what is on offer.
As the village has grown so has the need for good schooling. Mitcham is now home to a number of primary and secondary schools with a ‘Good’ Ofsted rating, Saints Peter & Paul Catholic Primary School, St Mark’s Primary School, St Thomas of Canterbury Catholic Primary School, and St Mark’s Church of England Academy (seniors). The increase of good schools has seen an increase in the number of families wanting to move into the village further cementing the feeling of community.
