Gingerbread House

One of the highlights of Christmas is making a gingerbread house – or at least decorating a ready-made one if you don’t fancy making it yourself!  If you’re feeling brave or have the time to make your own, here’s a recipe that we have found via BBC Good Food.

Ingredients - gingerbread

250g unsalted butter
200g dark muscovado sugar
7 tbsp golden syrup
600g plain flour
2 tsp bicarbonate of soda
4 tsp ground ginger

To decorate

200g bag flaked almonds
2 egg whites
500g icing sugar
Selection of sweets, possibly mini chocolate fingers to
represent timber logs

1 Heat oven 200c/Gas 6
2 Melt butter, sugar and syrup in pan.
3 Mix flour, bicarbonate of soda and ground ginger in a large bowl.
4 Stir in butter to make stiff dough.
5 Make/Download/Cut out a template for your house from baking paper.
6 Roll out ¼ of the dough to the thickness of two £1 coins, cut out one section, slide the gingerbread on its baking paper onto a baking sheet.
7 Repeat until all your house and roof sections are complete.
8 Choose the most intact flaked almonds and gently poke them into the roof sections to look like roof tiles.
9 Bake for 12 minutes or until firm.
10 Leave to cool for a few minutes then trim the edges to make them sharp.
11 Leave to cool completely.
12 Put the egg whites into a bowl, sift in the icing sugar and stir to make a thick smooth icing.
13 Spoon into a piping bag, pipe generous snakes along the wall edges to join the walls together, leave to dry.
14 When completely dry, assemble roof panels.
15 Decorate the house with sweets and enjoy.
